What Is ICF Mentor Coaching — and Why Does It Matter?

ICF mentor coaching is not personal coaching — it's a structured professional development relationship focused entirely on your growth as a coach. Your mentor observes your coaching, reviews your recordings, and provides feedback aligned to the ICF Core Competencies. It is required for every ICF credential application.

"Mentor coaching is the professional support of a coach in order to achieve excellence in coaching competencies."

— International Coaching Federation
ACC Associate Certified Coach
10 total mentor coaching hours — minimum 3 must be individual (1:1). Must span at least 3 months. Verify your mentor coach's eligibility using the ICF Verify a Coach directory. Both of our ICF Mentoring packages satisfy this requirement.
PCC Professional Certified Coach
10 total mentor coaching hours — minimum 3 must be individual (1:1). Must span at least 3 months. Verify your mentor coach's eligibility using the ICF Verify a Coach directory. Both of our ICF Mentoring packages satisfy this requirement.
MCC Master Certified Coach
10 total mentor coaching hours — minimum 3 must be individual (1:1). Must span at least 3 months. Verify your mentor coach's eligibility using the ICF Verify a Coach directory. Both of our ICF Mentoring packages satisfy this requirement.
Renewal CCE Hours for Renewal
ACC renewal: 10 mentor coaching hours required each cycle (counts as 10 Core Competency CCEs toward your 40 total).
PCC & MCC renewal: Mentor coaching is optional — up to 10 hours count as Core Competency CCE credits toward your 40 required every 3 years. Not mandatory but highly recommended.

Mentoring vs. Training vs. Supervision vs. Coaching

All four are valuable — but they serve completely different purposes. Here's how to tell them apart.

🔹 Coaching — The ICF Definition

"Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential."

Core Focus

  • Client-led discovery
  • Unlocking potential
  • Future-oriented outcomes

Typical Characteristics

  • Coach does NOT give advice
  • Powerful questions & listening
  • Client generates own solutions

Example

  • A coach helps a client clarify their goals and uncover their own strategy for a career change — without telling them what to do.
Aspect 🎯 Coaching 🤝 Mentoring 📚 Training 🔍 Supervision
Primary Goal Unlock potential Development through experience Skill acquisition Reflective practice & quality
Who Provides Answers? The client Mentor often does Trainer does Coach + supervisor explore
Advice Given? ❌ No ✅ Yes ✅ Yes ⚠️ Sometimes (light)
Focus Future & goals Career & growth Knowledge & skills Practice, ethics, self-awareness
Approach Questioning & reflection Sharing experience Teaching Reflective dialogue
Structure Structured sessions Flexible Highly structured Structured but exploratory
Time Horizon Short–medium Long-term Short–medium Ongoing
Role of Professional Facilitator of thinking Advisor / Guide Instructor Reflective partner
🎯
Coaching
"You have the answers — I'll help you find them."
🤝
Mentoring
"I've been there — here's what I've learned."
📚
Training
"Here's what you need to know and practice."
🔍
Supervision
"Let's reflect on how you're showing up and working."

⚖️ Key Distinctions — The ICF Perspective

  • The biggest line the ICF draws is around coaching vs. advice-giving: coaching = non-directive; mentoring & training = directive.
  • Supervision is unique because it focuses on the coach — not the client — ensuring ethical, effective practice and building self-awareness.
  • Mentor coaching sits at the intersection: it's directive enough to give ICF Competency feedback, yet structured around your growth as a coach — not life advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ICF mentor coaching and why do I need it?
ICF mentor coaching is a professional development relationship where an experienced coach helps you develop your coaching skills — not a personal coaching relationship. The ICF requires 10 mentor coaching hours as part of every credential application (ACC, PCC, MCC). Without documented mentor coaching hours from a qualified mentor, your credential application cannot be submitted.
How many hours do I need for the ACC credential?
The ICF requires 10 mentor coaching hours for the ACC over a minimum of 3 months, with at least 3 hours as individual (1:1) sessions with an eligible PCC or MCC credentialed mentor. Both HWH packages — $1,500 (Group + 3 × 1:1) and $2,400 (10 × 1:1) — fully satisfy this requirement.
How many hours do I need for the PCC credential?
The ICF PCC credential requires 10 mentor coaching hours over a minimum of 3 months, with at least 3 as individual (1:1) sessions with a PCC or MCC credentialed mentor. Both HWH packages — $1,500 (Group + 3 × 1:1) and $2,400 (10 × 1:1) — fully satisfy this requirement.
Can mentor coaching hours count toward my renewal?
Yes. Yes. For ACC holders, 10 mentor coaching hours are required each renewal cycle (every 3 years) and count as Core Competency CCE credits toward your 40 total CCEs required. For PCC and MCC holders, mentor coaching is optional for renewal but up to 10 hours count as Core Competency CCE credits — not Resource Development. This makes the HWH packages valuable both for initial credentialing and for renewal cycles.
Do I need to already be enrolled in an ICF training program?
No. The HWH Mentor Coaching package is available to any coach seeking ICF credential hours — whether you completed your coach training at HWH, another ICF-accredited school, or elsewhere. You do not need to be enrolled in Level 1 or any other HWH program to book mentor coaching with Dr. Lisa.
What happens during the sessions?
Each 60-minute session is a focused conversation about coaching sessions. You may submit a 20-60 minute session 48 hours in advance of the 1:1 mentoring session, bring a recording of a session you have conducted, discuss specific coaching moments, explore competency questions, or work through challenging client situations. In the event that you are requesting feedback on recorded sessions, Dr. Lisa provides structured, ICF-aligned written feedback.
How long does the 10-session package take to complete?
Per ICF rules, the 10 mentor coaching hours must span a minimum of 3 months. Most coaches complete the package over 3–6 months, meeting approximately every 2–3 weeks. Sessions are conducted via Zoom in English and can be scheduled flexibly around your calendar.
